In the hoops world, signature shoes are usually reserved for basketball royalty—All-Stars, MVPs and Hall of Famers. LeBron got one before he even stepped foot in the league. The combination of the teenager's astounding talent and his ability to generate buzz made him a once-in-a-lifetime target for shoe companies. A bidding war ensued. On 22 May 2003, Nike inked LeBron to a record-setting rookie endorsement deal, tipping off one of the most successful signature franchises and partnerships in the history of sports. 23 years later, we're still going strong.

Inspired by the classic orange Nike colours that greet you when entering the campus, the LeBron XXIII 'Shoe Bag' takes those same hues and spreads them throughout. A grey embroidery around the crown midsole nods to the grey and white pillars that frame the entry to the campus—and all the greatness that lies within. On the upper, a repeat graphic with "Swoosh!" is meant to look similar to a newspaper headline, with dollar signs and Swooshes printed throughout. On the heel, a "Megadeal" decal pays homage to a certain famous lottery game, indicating that Nike struck gold by signing a future King.
